Advancing the cause of canonization for Tom Vander Woude

Heroic Acts Of Loving Service
Tom's life serves as a role model for men wanting to know what a good man truly is—a man of faith, family, and sacrifice.
On September 8, 2008, Tom Vander Woude gave his life to save his son Joseph, who had fallen into a septic tank. Without hesitation, Tom jumped in after him, lifting his son so he could breathe.
This selfless act of fatherly love exemplifies Christ’s teaching that “No greater love has a man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13).

Path to Sainthood
In 2017, Pope Francis approved a new path to sainthood: the offering of one's life in an act of heroic charity.
1st Step
Servant of God
The first step in the canonization process is the title “Servant of God,” which begins with the opening of the cause.
2nd Step
Venerable
After a thorough investigation, if the person is found to have lived a life of heroic virtue, they may be declared “Venerable.”
3rd Step
Beatification
With verification of a miracle attributed to the person’s intercession, they may be beatified and called “Blessed.”
4th Step
Sainthood
For canonization another miracle is needed, attributed to the intercession of the Blessed and having occurred after his or her beatification. With canonization, the Blessed acquires the title of Saint.
